Conjunctivitis

If you have noticed your child waking up with a red, itchy eye or lashes that are stuck together with a bit of discharge, you are likely dealing with conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye.

At Children's Physicians, we understand that eye irritation can be uncomfortable for your child and concerning for you. Our clinical teams in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Palm City, FL, are here to provide a professional evaluation and a clear path to recovery in a supportive and friendly environment.

Understanding Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis is a clinical term for inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, clear tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. When this tissue becomes irritated or infected, the tiny blood vessels within it become more visible, giving the eye its characteristic pink or red appearance.

There are three main types of conjunctivitis, and identifying which one your child has is the first step in effective treatment:

  • Viral Conjunctivitis: This is very common and often accompanies a cold or respiratory infection. It usually produces a watery discharge and can be highly contagious.
  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis: This type typically involves more swelling and a thicker, yellow or green discharge. It often requires professional treatment to clear the infection.
  • Allergic Conjunctivitis: In our Florida climate, pollen and pet dander are frequent triggers. This type usually affects both eyes and is accompanied by intense itching and watery eyes, but it is not contagious.

What to Expect During the Visit

When you visit one of our offices in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, or Palm City, FL, we will perform a clinical exam to determine the cause of the irritation. Our pediatricians will:

  1. Review the History: We will ask when the symptoms started and if your child has had any recent fevers or coughs.
  2. Examine the Eye: We check the type of discharge, the level of redness, and whether the lymph nodes near the ear are swollen, which is a common sign of a viral infection.
  3. Provide a Personalized Plan: If the infection is bacterial, we may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment. For viral or allergic cases, we focus on supportive care, such as cool compresses and specialized allergy drops, to keep your child comfortable.

Helping Your Child (and Your Household) Recover

Because infectious pink eye can spread quickly through schools and daycares, we provide professional guidance on how to prevent it from moving through your family. This includes discussions about handwashing, how to clean linens, and when it is safe for your child to return to their normal activities.

At Children's Physicians, we work hard to provide accessible and reliable care for your child's health needs. We want to get those eyes bright and clear, so your little one can get back to enjoying the Florida sunshine.
