Caring for an Upset Stomach

Nearly every child experiences an upset stomach occasionally. In many cases, kids begin to feel much better in just a few hours. If your child's stomach problems continue, the children's doctors at Children's Physicians in Jupiter, Palm City and Palm Beach Gardens, FL, offer treatments to soothe your son or daughter's symptoms.

Why does my child have an upset stomach?

Upset stomachs can be caused by many things, including:

  • Eating Habits: Does your child gulp down food because he or she is eager to get back to playing? Eating too fast or too much could be the cause of an upset stomach, as could eating spicy, fried or fatty foods.
  • Anxiety: Stress and anxiety aren't just problems for adults. When kids are worried about a big test or upset about an issue with friends, they may feel nauseated, belch or vomit.
  • Food Intolerance: If an upset stomach seems to happen after your child eats or drinks dairy products, lactose intolerance may be to blame. The condition happens when your child has trouble digesting sugar in milk and other dairy products. Your child could also have an intolerance to wheat, soy, corn, eggs or other foods.
  • A Virus: A viral illness could cause your child's stomach to feel upset.
  • GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) can affect both adults and kids. If your child has an upset stomach, heartburn and other symptoms several times a week, he or she might have GERD.

What can I do about my child's upset stomach?

If your child feels like eating, bland food, like crackers or broth, is best until he or she feels better. Avoid giving your child dairy products, as they might make nausea or diarrhea worse. Placing a heating pad or hot water bottle over your child's stomach can be helpful in some cases, as long as the temperature isn't too high.

When symptoms continue more than a few days or are severe, it's a good idea to schedule an appointment at the Palm City, Jupiter or Palm Beach Gardens, FL, pediatrics office. Our children's doctors can determine why your child has an upset stomach and recommend treatments based on their diagnosis.
