The Importance of Immunizations

In this day and age, we are lucky to be able to get all the information we need at the click of a button. Unfortunately, the information we often find is not always accurate. This is particularly true when it comes to health. There is a lot of misinformation out there and it can sometimes be difficult to parse the accurate from the inaccurate. As a parent, we know your priority is to keep your child healthy; it’s also the priority of our Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and Palm City, FL, pediatricians. Find out why immunizations are so important to the health of your growing child.

What is a vaccine?

A vaccine provides your body with antibodies, which help your body to fight a foreign invader or disease and to build up immunity to the infection. In some vaccines, an inactive or weak version of the disease is injected into the body, which is just enough to stimulate the body’s release of antibodies to fight the infection. These antibodies are then in your body for the rest of your life to prevent infections in the future.

Are vaccines safe?

This is one of the most common questions that our children’s doctors receive on a regular basis. Of course, as we mentioned earlier, our top priority is to provide your child with the care they need to stay healthy. Vaccines are one surefire way to protect against a lot of childhood illnesses that are serious or life-threatening such as polio.

By not vaccinating children this not only leaves your child susceptible to these dangerous infections but also other children that your child comes in contact with. This is why it’s important that all children receive the recommended vaccines unless otherwise indicated by your child’s doctor.

Which vaccines does my child need?

Your child will go through a series of different vaccines throughout the course of their life starting from birth. Your child’s first pediatrician visit should be only a few days after they are born and these visits will continue quite regularly for the first 3 years of their life, after which they should come in once a year for checkups. During these checkups we will administer a host of vaccines. The CDC provides a helpful immunization schedule for children and teens.
