FAQs About Immunizations

Are immunizations safe for all children?

Immunizations are one of the simplest and most effective means of preventing childhood illness. Generally, we believe that it’s safest for Immunizationall children to be immunized according to the schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Some children may have special health concerns requiring modification of the standard schedule. If you're worried about your child's health in regards to their scheduled vaccinations, we at Children's Physicians in Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and Palm City, FL offer a screening checklist that you can print off and bring to your child’s appointment. This gives us a chance to discuss together the best way to keep your child healthy.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include fever and localized redness or swelling at the injection site--natural effects of the immune system doing its job.

Severe allergic reactions to immunizations are rare. If your child is extremely lethargic, unresponsive or having trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 for immediate care.

Will they prevent my child from catching diseases?

Immunizations have eliminated or significantly reduced the risk of catching many serious or lethal diseases. Occasionally a child may come down with something they’ve already been immunized against, but in these cases the condition is generally much milder and clears up quickly. For vaccines requiring multiple doses, it is important to continue receiving the doses on schedule for optimal immunity.

What if my child has already missed some scheduled immunizations?

We’re happy to set up a visit for your child to begin or continue receiving their scheduled immunizations. Your child will follow the catch-up schedule to ensure they are protected against the most dangerous diseases for their age.
